Default Another Drive Shaft question.

Forgive me if this has been asked before; I just ordered a new front drive shaft. While I wait for it to arrive, I would like to avoid an unfortunate incident with the current one breaking in the meantime.

Land Rover Discovery

Anyway, Can I just straight up remove my front drive shaft and still drive the disco normally?

Secondly, when I install the new one; is it just as simple as removing the old one and bolting the new on in, then greasing or is there more?

Thanks

Hi there,
Unless it is vibrating or squeeking, it probably will not fail in the next day or two. If you remove it, your Disco won't move. Yes, changing it is that simple. It is a good idea to replace the locknuts that hold it on.

No, you will damage your drive train if you drive it sans front shaft if you do not engage CDL first. If you have a 2004 that is straight forward, just use the shifter and you're set. If you have an early 2002 (might be 2001) or older feel the top of the transfer case for what feels like a little bolt sticking up then like you're laying down looking at the sky put a 10mm open end wrench on the bottom of the bolt and turn CCW. When you get in you will see a diff lock light on your dash and probably hear a quick beep. With it locked you're all set.

you will not find "what feels like a little bolt sticking up" on an 03, it's not there unless someone changed the transfer case.

No not on a 03 unless like said above, but its not likely it as been changed. Just remember this truck is not made for speed and they usually break upon acceleration so be light in your pedal.

Alright. So what size are the lock nuts, so I don't have to go anywhere after I tear the old one out? And how many do I need?

The propshaft / driveshaft nylock nuts are Grade 5, 3/8", 24 TPI. Not just on this project but on all remember to never use a nylock nut twice they are designed to be a one time use. You will need 8 new nuts. Good luck!
Westlake hardware/ace hardware good place to get them.
