Yet another question about rebuilding the front drive shaft

Default Yet another question about rebuilding the front drive shaft

So my rover just ticked over 111k miles on it. I know that i must rebuild the front drive shaft. The only thing is that i will not have the money to do so for the next month. I also know that it is hard on the rear end to drive it with the front drive shaft removed. So do i take the chance and drive the rover for the next month or so with both drive shafts on and hope that the front one does not explode? Or do i lock the CDL and drive easy on only the rear drive shaft until i have the funds to rebuild the front one, even if it could be a month or more? There is a little voice in the back of my head telling me to pull the front drive shaft and drive easy on it.

And yes i know that Land Rover calls them prop shafts but it just sounds funny to me.

Mileage is a less concern than the condition of your's now.

Have you inspected it? is it lubed? are the joints solid (NO play)?

Have you pulled it, the joints move smoothly?

If yes to all, I'd drive it with no fear.

I'd also drive w/o the front shaft if I had to, but not for alot of miles, nor over 60-70mph.

It "seems" to be in great condition. I pulled it and gave it a once over. I am just starting to get some steering wheel wobble and i know that the steering is tight and the alignment is not off. Why not above 60 or 70 mph? It seems to me that speed is not really a factor when driving with only one drive shaft. Seems to me that the time that it would be the most harmful would be in city driving, when acceleration occurs. But i could be completely wrong.

Steering wobble doesn't have anything to do with the condition of the propshaft.

You are right, you don't want to drive on the rear only for a month, yet on the other side of the issue, if it were to fail your are looking at the cost of a tranny also.
The fact that yours hasn't failed is good, but it is a roll of the dice, mine failed at around 33,000 miles, granted, at the time I was wheeling hard at least 2 or 3 weekends a month.
How many miles do you drive every day and will you be rebuilding it or what?

I could definitely understand not having funds for something, but think about this:

If you won't have the money to rebuild it (doing it yourself - including rental tools if needed - maybe around $100-200) then you definitely won't have the money to repair it if it breaks ($300-3000 or more depending on damage done) - not to mention you won't have your wheels.

I didn't like the way the car felt with only rear drive (especially off the line and uphill,) but the alternative could've been worse. Just my 2 cents. We drove it like that for only 3 days, but they were stop and go NYC/North Jersey traffic with 50 miles per day.

antichrist, i did not use the correct words. I mean more of a vibration at 55-65mph, not so much as a wobble forsay. Mike i will be rebuilding it myself. I decided to just get the parts and rebuild it. Damn being a poor college student......

its less than $100 in parts. go sell your dorm roomates ipad.

Yeah, advance auto parts web site, free shipping if you get 4 u-joints and the centering kit. Free shipping kicks in at $70 and 3 + the center kit are under $70. If you have one near you, just get them there.
