Default Another overheating thread

So this one has me pretty frustrated, so I am asking for help. 04 disco (120,000 miles) new radiator, 180 degree thermostat, new hoses, new intake gaskets upper and lower, and o-rings for coolant hoses on the intake. The disco is properly bled with Peak coolant 50/50 and Water Wetter. When driving the temps are anywhere between 210 and 220 (usually toward 220). When stopped at a red light or in traffic it inches toward 230, but when I get back moving is cools back down to the 215 ish mark. The fan clutch seems to have that “peanut butter” feel to it when cold and still has resistance when warm. When I changed the radiator I noticed it was full of glitter from stop leak. I am not loosing coolant from what i can tell... maybe... so should i be looking at a new fan ($250) or a Head Gasket job? Anything i may be missing?

Thanks for all the help.

Try flushing the heater core first, with a garden hose, both directions. Especially since you think there was stop-leak put in. The heater core may be gummed up, and it's not uncommon.

A new Hayden and Doorman fan and clutch will cost you $60.
No need to spend $250
The aftermarket fan and fan clutch are 2 seperate parts(not one like stock), so you'll need 4 bolts from a hardware store to put them together(no stock bolts to remove and use), I also forget the bolt size, sorry.

Doorman fan #620-112
Hayden clutch #2781 or #2991 heavy duty

Yup stop leak is not good, I would think clogged rad or heater core. You may have to flush both with cold water, you want run the water into both hoses so you flush and reverse flush to try and clear any debris.

Also, which 180 degree thermostat did you buy? Some on the market have been mislabeled.

Yep those temps sound like an OEM temp range thermostat to me. Fan Clutch/Fan Blade wise the 2 separate units are much better vs the one piece unit found on 03-04 D2's. New fan clutch "should" come with new bolts (almost all of mine do).

While you got the coolant out do the inline thermo mod and you will run at 186.8 all day long. That mod is a must have on all my trucks.

The thermostat is a motorad with 180 stamped on it. I triple checked. As far as the two piece fans go where do I buy the blades?

And many of the cheap aftermarket thermostats don't run at the advertised 180 degree temp very reliably so be sure to use an OEM 180. Even though they are significantly more expensive it's totally worth it. The OEM thermos have better quality internal seals, also.
