Even with the pressure cap off, it just blows the water out

A couple have posted up great results, others have had to replace a ton of crap in the cooling system.

Well it kinda precludes the work of replacing head gaskets - coats everything. You may be able to pressure wash the cooling system out...... if you have a pressure washer....

The reason I asked about the trans for the LT1 is cuz it aint nothing without one...... This link will give you a long winded idea of what you need to swap GM motivation in -http://www.defendersource.com/forum/f6/gm-gen-4-conversion-including-ls-51290.html

If it was me and I didn't think a liner had slipped I'd replace the head gaskets and any other cooling system convenience oddities Rover came up with (or trim them out) and put the LT on ice for awhile. Then I'd work on gathering the parts needed for the LT swap.

What year DII? It matters.

Apestit, I'm a little confused. Just what problem causes you to think the headgaskets need to be replaced? You reworked the cooling system recently.

What temps are you getting now? Is the truck losing coolant?

Before I started tearing it apart to replace the headgaskets I'd do a lot more diagnosis. Don't be impulsive. Diagnose, diagnose, diagnose.

If the temps are acceptable and the truck is not losing coolant let's discuss some other ideas.

I thought it was the head gaskets because exhaust gas was blowing up through expansion tank, I could not keep fluid in it. Temps ran from 180-190. I wish I could post a picture of the headgasket, it looks like it was bad.

You said the line from the upper intake, which is actually from the throttle body heater, was "blowing bubbles" in the coolant reservoir. Did you see actual bubbles or was coolant simply being forced out of the reservoir overflow?

It's possible the only thing you need is a new reservoir cap. When they get old they can fail to hold pressure, which can cause a loss of coolant through the overflow.

I would think that if you were seeing actual exhaust gases getting into the coolant you would also be getting misfires. The head gasket typically fail at the extreme rear of the engine in coolant escapes there.

Maybe this is all moot at this point. Have you already removed the heads?

Exhaust gas in coolant dye test would be my next step to rule it yes or no. Gets rid of the guesses. Then if it is positve is it a gasket or a sleave......

I agree. A sniff of the coolant reservoir like the OP described may not be reliable.
