Another XYZ Thread
Hello everyone. Im new to the rover world so i need alot of help here. I just bought my moms 2000 disco 2 about a month ago. I drove it back from her place which was about 400 miles away no problems. but being a mechanic in the military i figure fisrt things fisrt lets bring it up to service. all fluids and filter are brand new. it dose have the three amigos. but they have been there for almost 5 to 6 years. she just never fixed them. anyways after many late nights under the disco. i finally got it off jack stands only to drive it for about 2 days when the M and S light started flashing and the shifter and dash gear display started flashing too. it has a brand new battery, alternator is working fine and all fuse and connection look good. everything ive read so far points to the xyz or neutral safety switch. is there a way to test this switch, can it be adjusted. if it dose need to be replaced, were is the best place to get one quick. im running out of time and am depending on this disco to drive see my family for the holidays. Any help you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.
Quick they are $$$. Nearby salvage yard?
Some members have removed them, drilled out rivets, cleaned out muck, LIGHTLY cleaned contacts on open metal switch contacts (don't file them down), etc.
Seems condesate drain from AC leaks on this.
Pages from RAVE, you'll find more in automatic gearbox section and in the electrical circuits diagrams. The text page describes which XYZ switch goes to which wire, but this is shown as a block diagram on the schematic.

okay quick update. i had it scanned and two codes came up. p0734 and p0722, there scanner said p0734 was the 4 gear ratio was incorrect and that the p0722 the speed sensor circut had no power. but they would clear the codes for me. i did read that after market air filters can cause the p0734 code.

0722 is torque converter slipping (sounds like time for tranny fluid drain and replace, along with filter)
0734 is 4th gear ratio implausible (sounds like xyz switch gunk could be fooling ECU as to what gear is engaged)
These codes come from the tranny ECU, are documented in the RAVE workshop manual under automatic gearbox on section/ page 44-19; that is raw page 616 of 1529. Mention that because the "luxury" scanners that have 4,000 fixes in the palm of your hand... don't always have the reserved codes correctly for every model and firmware rev on the planet, or every computer in the vehicle that talks to the OBDII port. Always a good idea to search the book.
Some vehicles have more microprocessors than lug nuts, and in the future, their will be a market for used ones, people will strip and warehouse them. Maybe the Paul Grant Electronics Department will have to expand....

okay off to get a filter and scanner and ill try cleaning out the xyz switch. what the worse that happens it stay broken. i did do a filter and fluid on it already but i might not have the fuild at the proper level. ive put it on a level surfice. having the fill plug open filled it to were the fluid came out then started then started it ran through the gears and filled it somemore till it pured out waited till it stop draining out the fill plug to close it. ill try it again maybe with a lucas additive. thanks for the help. ill keep this updated to let you guys know how it gose.
Hold on a sec.......in your write up for changing the trany fluid......did you check the level with the truck running or off? Truck needs to be running while you are checking the fluid! Maybe I misunderstud your write up?
