Any reason to avoid an '03? (assuming it is outside the range...)
boss, Green Lake is about 1.5 hours south of me, im in Shawano
Yes i know about the front cover replacement, and i talked to the service writer today about it. However I cant get a clear answer from anyone on if this will fix my problem. On the fourms the only people ive heard that fix there pump this way are ones that have the sudden failure exploding oil pumps. Mines a slow deterioration, I'm not sure if its the same case.

Shoot, I'll even donate $50 to the cause if you'd commit...
'03 owners unite! :P
I have on '03 Disco that has given me very little problems. 86,000 miles and still going strong. I keep reading about these bad VINs but have not been able to find anything on the search. Think I am doing it wrong. Got an extended warranty that expires in about a year. Should I drive the hell out of it and blow the engine!!!!lol
I just added ARB steps and OME shocks and coils. Should I put it up for sale? Don't think I could part with it. I enjoy the ride.

I have a good story on the oil pump problem:
bought an 04' SE, very clean, with 41K miles from the original owner ( so he claimed) in Beverly Hills. Drove ok for about 150 miles; and it left me stranded in the middle of nowhere at @ 10pm. One expensive tow and an overnight hotel bill later, got it to a "reputable" shop in San Luis Obispo ( I won't say who, but they're about to get sued), who after $2800 later, could not fix the check engine light and knock problem.
aahhh " the coil packs" he said; "no, the valves" he said; "ah, the cam" he said.
Bottom line, $3000 later, it still run like CRp, had to have the top end totally redone ( valves, lifters, cam, headgaskets) all over again, for another $4000.
Moral of the story, stick to a DII 02' or earlier. I HATE to admit, I loved the look of my briefly owned 04'...

I have an '03 with 113k. I have had no major problems (crankshaft sensor, 02's, and an oil leak that seems to have gotten worse recently). How can you tell if the oil pump is losing pressure slowly?
Also, how do you know if the head gaskets need replacing?

Seems like most people have had different experiences on here with 2003's
I have a 2003 in the Death VIN Range. All maintenance performed by me up to date. Oil pressure guage installed and running well with 90,800 on it. Must have got a good one.
Most of the time hot 15psi running at idle and 45psi @ 2000rpm. I use 10w40 Mobil 1.
Cold startup is 45psi
Check the 2nd page of the oil pressure gauge install to see my setup. With black A-pillars and digital oil pressure guage.

I too have an '03 DII with a VIN in the 'death range'; however I am currently @ 118K without an issue (knock wood). The key may be the oil changes and the quality of the oil (I use Rotellia 5W40 100% synthetic w/ 1 qt Lucas engine treatment). The morale is that there are probably good and bad, and to some extent you make your own luck...
Fireman,
What is the type of Lucas engine treatment you use? I know some people on here hate Lucas. But it did stop my crankseal leak after 2 oil changes. Gota love when some snake oil works.
