The facelift D2 used the 4HP24. 2002 and below used the 4HP22.

in BMW speak, the 4HP22 was used in tons of models. There’s a full list here

I was just looking at this. I guess as long as i find a 4x4 beamer it should be the exact same thing. After giving it some thought, rebuild sounds a bit more down my alley - at least i know that trans been working fine for last 40k miles and I'd really hate to buy some junk.

Get a good 4HP24 and the driveshafts out of an 03-04 from a breaker, preferably one with low mileage. It will be the same cost as rebuilding and the HP24 has larger clutches and a better front pump seal.

Ironically, none of the AWD BMWs used 4HP transmissions. It was only in their RWD drive cars (and AFAIK, they still have never made a FWD car). The output of the 4HP22/4HP24 drove a transfer case in the case of Land Rover, or a driveshaft in the case of BMW (and many others). For this reason there may be differences in a rebuild kit but the transmissions themselves are the same. If you're looking to replace your trans then I would follow Extinct's advice, I don't know that the bellhousing would be the same if you tried to wedge a BMW trans in there. I think that level of difference might get down to the part number level as opposed to the series of transmission. It might be worth exploring from a rebuild perspective if there is a large cost advantage.

@ahab the thought behind the beamer was to use the BMW rebuild kit b/c it's half the price of the LR one - I doubt the trans itself would be a one-for-one swap

My questions are:

- Are the bolt patterns the same on the 24 as on the 22?
- Can my ECU run the 24?

I use the center dif lock occasionally and would not want to lose this feature so it would need to be an 04 trans. I also hear that the dif gearing is slightly different in 03-04, but I guess it's taken up in the transfer case.

If you are going the route of a TC, I know your in WA, there is a shop in NJ that rebuilt the torque converter on my 740, a while back. It was a cheaper, better option than sourcing a new one, or risking a used one. There were some national companies that you could ship to if cared to look around.

I would think the gear ratios would be different between BMW / LR for each application. Same transmission / different ratios & ECU inputs.

I know it might sound insane, but with a used TC costing $100 i'm ok dropping out the TCase and trans if it breaks again. I'm only rebuilding the trans this time round, so next time i have to do this, I'll rebuild the t-case

I really like my disco, but i don't want to to turn into a money pit - sadly, as cool as these trucks are, they're just not worth the "investment"
