Default ashtray

The spring in my dash ashtray broke; does anyone know how to fix this? I don't smoke but I had been using the ashtray to store gum wrappers and it'd be nice to fix it. (And yes, I do realize how lucky I am that this is my biggest Disco "repair" mystery at the moment.)

Thanks.

I'm not sure about fixing the spring, but when I have taken the ashtray out there is some grease along the side teeth. Maybe there isn't any and it's sticking. Have you removed the ashtray and looked behind to see if there's something catching on it?

You "store" gum wrappers?
Will the ashtray not open?

my spring does not work also,so I just leave it cracked so I can open and close it though I don't keep anything in there other than some buisness cards. I do use the change drawer alot and it has the same issue. Its tough if it does close all the way but so far I have managed fine.

Well, I "store" gum wrappers there until it gets emptied once a week. There's grease on the tracks and it will open if I grab the bottom at the back and pull a bit. I've taken the tray out and there's a metal stick type thing that is just hanging loose in the back. I've looked and I can't see wear this would fit into the back of the actual tray; I also can't manage to remove the stick. The stick will slide around but it won't come out. A broken ashtray is such a small but annoying thing...
