Quick question, changing my tranny fluid, I fell up a quart and half short(dont ask how). My neighbor had a couple bottles of mercon v that said could be used in vehicles with dex III. O.K. to use 1-1/2 quarts?? I did add a bottle of lucas if that makes a diff. Its a ' 98 disco.

 

I am gonna say no. I don't think Mercron 5 is reverse compatible with Dexron 3. Read the bottle.

 

I hope this isn't too lame a question, but how do you tell how if the tranny's full? The dipstick says "check cold, ideling in neutral" So I checked the level 1st thing in the morning, adding fluid a little at a time while its ideling in neutral. I dont know if it was the tranny warming up, but the fluid level jumped from the low mark to 1/2 inch over the high mark. Normal??

 

The sudden jump in fluid level is because of the fluid stuck to the sides of the dipstick tube.
Let it sit for a hour or so and then recheck it.

 

Thanks guys, in 20/20 hindsight I dont know why I bothered. With 138,xxx I'm just gonna change the filter too. But speaking of such, does just the cross member or the y-pipe too have to come out?

And does anyone happen to know, my rear carpet says 50th anniversary edition. How can I tell if it is so? Dosent look any diffrent than any other disco's I've seen

Yes the cross member and y-pipe need to come out.

And the 50th anniversery edition just says 50th, nothing else special about it.
