Vehicle lighting is complex so you should do some research and think about your use case (off-road, on-road, cosmetic). If your budget is $300 or less then a pair of Hella rallye, ARB/IPF, PIAA or KC halogen lights would be an improvement over your current lights. If your budget is $500+ take a look at Baja Designs and Diode Dynamics. Here is an interesting video that compares led lights:
Diode dynamics lights are great but I don't like their looks personally on the rovers, gotta have rounds and the Bajas don't look like a lot of cheaper led lights. They kind of still have the old school big halogen round look only a ton more output. I do have diode dynamic 6" sae rated fog light bars in amber and very pleased with them.
I've had Hella 4000 Compacts on a couple D2's & love em (black, compact vs the full-size 4000's, driving beam). Well built, mounting, they don't seem to corrode or look weathered after a few years. And don't look like something out of a Subaru Mad Max accessory catalogue lol.
PS yes I am aware I should not turn them on thru the plastic guards but wanted to see what it looked like in above pics.
Why compact? Regular Hella 4000's are just a wee bit too large for my tastes.
Lighting quality: I've not measured or done any technical analysis whatsoever, but... They will light up my entire neighborhood, or acres of woods, great fun on ski trips. And importantly, they don't wobble or vibrate offroad. I have them mounted to the LR accessory brush guard.
I think the roundies look the best on a vintage 2000 car. LED's all the way on my new Defender, but on the old stuff, I like round, and non LED.
