Default Auxillary Fan

Good afternoon. Noticed today that my auxillary fans seem to run pretty much the entire time from initial start to park. My morning commute is pretty much 10 minutes and the fan starts and runs until I switch it off. This is occuring with the A/C off. I have read through the threads and it seems I may have a bad temp sensor?

Cooling gauge goes to the middle within 2 minutes of operation and does not move even on longer trips? Have not noted the fan running the entire time on long trips, just realized it this morning.

Ordering an ultra gauge today to help monitor temps! Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

The ultra gauge will give you better insight into what's going on. I need to get one myself. But I will say that on my truck from cold start, my needle takes much longer than 2 minutes to reach middle on the temperature guage. So if it's literally 2 mins, something is going on.

The middle of the guage generalizes a wide range of temperatures, that could be considered "safe". But in actuallity you could be on the brink of an overheat and not even know it.

Have you tested, or do you know how to test your viscus clutch, it may have filed making the electric fan run more.

Thanks for the quick replies. I do not know how to test the clutch. Googled it but did not get a good answer. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks again.

When stone cold prior to a cold start, spin the fan 2 or 3 times to see how much resistance there is, then do it again when hot, should have twice the spining resistance.

Okay, with the vehicle cold the fan will only spin an 1/8 of a turn and by the 3rd try spent maybe 1/6 of a turn. After I ran the vehicle a while the fan would spin around at least a full turn or more.

One thing to note, when cranking from a dead cold I hear a clicking noise coming from the Power Steering Pump area. The auxillary fan did not come on. The clicking persists for approximately 8 minutes until the auxillary fan came on and then the clicking when away.

Also, I measured the time it took my temp gauge to go from cold to the middle of the gauge where it stays at and it took 2 minutes and 52 seconds. Seems awfully quick.

Thanks and I look forward to feedback.

Very curious about the source of the clicking noise.

AT idle, your temp is climbing to 210F.
And that's when the AUX fan comes on.

If you put the AC on the temp lowers.

IF you rev the engine at 1,500 or so - the temp seems to lower.

If you run the heater on HIGH - this can lower the temp too and finally have the AUX fan go back off.

Over a full turn when released at hot temp I would belive the viscous clutch is close to pooped out. There is a cheap Chevy cross over listed in out tech section, under $70 I think.

So, start with a new viscus clutch and report back to us.
