Default Bad Diff, T Case, or Trans

2003 D2- New Front Driveshaft.

I have a clunk noise when I let off the accelerator, a clink when I engage reverse, and when i put the car in Park in rolls about 3-4 inches before it catches. All this existed before the new driveshaft.

Any thoughts? My Mechanic thinks its my front axle/diff after a phone conversation.

I haven't had a chance to jack it up and turn the wheels.

The clunk seems to be a common occurrence in general driveline issues, but I thought the moving after put in Park might be a specific sign.

Thanks

Without seeing and feeling the 'clunk' it's hard to diagnose and may be nothing. Most LR's clunk somewhere along the drivetrain. Mine clunks when changing from D to R and back but I don't get too alarmed. As for rolling in P that's quite common if one considers the amount of shafts, gears and connections between the auto gearbox and the wheels. You may notice that when in P and you take off the parking brake it sometimes rolls either forwards or backwards a couple of inches which is fairly common and normal as it's just the gears backlash being released. Unless there is any specific horrible grinding noises I wouldn't get too concerned.

Thanks for the input. Its alarming as my 2 other D2s don't do it as bad(the rolling), and if the other 2 clunk, It can't be heard.

I'm going to have to get it up on stands and see what's up. Just checking if anyone has any similar tales.

once you get it up rotate the front tire and see how much play you have between when the tire starts to move and when the output shaft on the differential start to move (drive shaft)

Default Update

Jacked the front up, put trans and t case in neutral. Spun the front driveshaft and only the drivers side wheel moved.

I'm guessing that means broken passenger side axle?

No, no wrong guess. If you stop the propshaft turning then the opposite wheel will then turn in the opposite direction. If you turn the propshaft and stop the wheel that is turning the other wheel will turn - that's how the diff operates. It's highly unlikely the axle driveshaft is broken as you would soon know and the noise would have been horrendous. To break a driveshaft you need to input serious stresses on severe offroad useage. I've only ever seen two broken axle driveshafts in 45 years on an LR and both on series LR's.

If I turn the prop shaft, shouldn't both front wheels turn?
