Bad news: Tom Wood's driveshaft failed
The repair kits are greaseable or non-greaseable. Which you use depends on the center head. Stock DII front propshafts have non-greaseable center heads, that's why you use a 7-0081NG kit when rebuilding.
See, I bought a DI so I dont have to worry about it.
Just lube all four u-joints at every oil change or after deep wading and forget about it.
The original u-joints lasted 180,000 miles before I replaced them because they would no longer take grease.
I feel bad for you DII guys.
Vandev-your rants are hilarious. I too have wondered if someone could fashion a "deflector shield" to keep the driveshaft from popping a hole in the side of the transmission when the double cardon fails.

Thanks spike, i am having my friend who has a steel shop fab me one up... I will post pics. Yea, when is the last time you heard of a car or trucks driveshaft totaling the drivetrain.... Only a bunch of idiots could cook something like this up... I too enjoy your humor as it is about the only thing holding be back from taking my M4 and lighting mine up... We all drank the coolaid....
So true, so true... I wanted a diesel 110 but couldn't afford it, yet...
great write-up.
i'm glad it's the transfer case side, because the diff side is a bitch to tighten with two opposing wrenches while laying under the truck. the transfer case side is easy.
(you only have to lift one wheel off the ground)

hence the wonderfully stiff handling on the road and beautifully functional interior..and one thing bmw has always gotten right... European styling.
