Angry Bad Oil Leak after changing Valve Pan Gasket

Hi Guys,

I trust this forum. So far you all seem to be right with your suggestions and diagnosis. I recently had my valve pan gaskets changed on a 2002 disco II. The car ran hot the next day and had to be towed. It had no coolant or oil. We figured oil was not put back after repair. Now its pouring oil put in about 9 quarts within the past week. Coolant has to be topped off daily and oil added. Dip stick shows no oil on the stick after adding 2 Quarts 1 day ago.
Mechanic says bring back may have gotten a bad gasket and seal...What do you think?

I bet that the mechanic did not use RTV in the 4 corners of the valley pan gasket the RAVE tells you to. It is a typical mistake from a mechanic that thinks they know it all and do not take the time to look up the correct install procedure.

Here is all the information that you or your "Mechanic" needs to do the job right this time.

I would print up the instructions, read over them, and then go ask you "Mechanic" how he installed the gaskets. After he tells you the wrong procedure, hand him the printed instructions and show him how things are supposed to be done. After they agree to redo the work for free, inform him that you will be watching your engine closely and if there looks to be any major damage from his F### up then they will be buying you a new engine. The only good thing about taking your car or truck to a mechanic is that they are liable for any mistakes. Don't be a push over, push back

The V8 has a valley pan gasket, or valve cover gaskets. There's no such thing as valve pan gaskets.

Good eye. I did not even catch that. There is no such gasket as the "valve pan".

So are we talking about the "Valve cover" or the "Valley Pan"?

I assume that we are talking about the "valley pan" gasket, but I suppose we could be talking about the valve cover gaskets instead. If that is the case then the advice I gave you above is null and void.

Valley Pan gaskets, sorry guys, I am but a girl. Trying to be an informed consumer when I can. Now it is said that my oil pressure swithch is bad and a seal behind the crankshaft?? Anyone heard of this and then if it was this was it this and the gasket or this instead of the gasket? Just sounding off..Not happy today....Does this sound possible?

Was your oil pressure light on the dash on?

When they say a bad seal behind the crankshaft I assume they are talking about the front or rear main seals. If they are talking about the rear main seal then you have to pull in engine to change it and it is a huge $$$$$ project.
If they are talking about the front main seal then it is in the front cover and is a much easier seal to replace. The price difference to repair the front or rear seals can be in the $1,000's. The front seal should be only a few hundrerd for a shop to replace, but because the rear is so much work they will charge you way over $1,000 to change it.

Are they trying to tell you that the bad crankshaft seal was the problem all along? If so then did they misdiagnose the valley pan gasket the first time or are they saying you needed a valley pan gasket and new crankshaft seals this whole time.

I still do not understand how a shop could let your truck go home with it leaking oil that bad to begin with. Didn't they test drive your truck before returning it to you and notice a trail of oil leading to the parking spot?
I think it is time you have a second opinion done.

I will clarify which seal in the morning. I was told rear seal behind crankshaft and that the oil pressure switch is bad. I am assuming its misdiagnosed as they are not admitting to any fault. Just saying now that these parts are bad, which is additional repair $$$ for me paid for the gasket job already which in my opinion i did not need. Based now on this information at hand. Going there...Thanks you are confirming my thoughts. I am no mechanic but things must make sense and be reasonable to me.....
