Chris, the reason for marking the flanges on removal is so that on re-assembly the u-joints remain clocked properly.

The grease zerk should be compressed under load (clocked properly) not pulled as eventually the joint can crack @ the zerk (weak spot in the casting).

You should pay attn to this upon reloading new u-joints.

If you think you may have dropped a needle into the cap on re-assembly, It sucks, but i'd pull it apart, it won't heal.

luck,greg

the new u joints have 2 grease fittings on them, and they are offset from each u joint. as for the tight axis on one of the new joints, I am not sure what you mean by dropping a needle in the cap, I dont think I messed up any of the new bearings on it, I just think the new snap rings were a bit thicker than before so to get them both under the lip I had to compress the 2 caps a bit tighter, it still swivels smoothly I just have to swivel it by hand, gravity will not do it alone like all the other ones.

chris....sounds like you are on the right track.....now put your fears aside.....take the afore mentioned big f@#%&^* hammer and lightly "rap" the yoke it will help the bearing caps to center them selves in the yoke and the movement of the joints will be more to your liking........I don't mean to sound like the old sage here.....but I personally have never installed a u-joint that this didn't help, and I've done some tough ones, good luck !

ok I loosened the u joint a bit and put the drive shaft back in the truck, also fixed the rotoflex back to the correct way and finally installed my new steering damper. the truck feels absolutely great. I want to thank everyone on here for helping me get these problems resolved, I don't think I could have done it on my own. Now I can get back to the list of repairs that don't need to be taken care of right away!

I just picked up the PDQ u joints for my D1 at Autozone. I have not yet started the project yet.

Autozone doesn't carry PDQ anymore.
Unless you found a store that had NOS, they are the Duralast made in China but use the PDQ/Neapco PN. If they say Duralast on the box, they are definitely not made by Neapco.
