Default Batteries..

My battery keeled over in winter. As a stop gap I swapped it with one of a couple in had sitting in the back of the garage. (had the odd battery kicking around from my Jeep days) Always meant to replace it with something else, but never got to it.

Playing with something electrical today I notice my turned off voltage is about 12.5. Charging is 13.8 - 14.5ish I know these figures arnt stunning. But I've had no issues with this random cast off battery.

I know colder weather will change that so I should be proactive.

First question. Do all batteries fit the standard battery box?
Cold Cranking Amps. The thing I have on now is really small, but doesn't give me a problem. Is this only really an issue in winter, when it has a bigger job to do to move Pistons with cold thick oil etc. what's the number I should be looking at?
Brand. Best thing I found a couple of years ago is getting something with a long warrantee. Means when it c***s out in 18 months I get a new one, for free. This was a AAP silver something-or-other.

Ok. Longer post than I planned. That's gin for you.

What battery should I get?

I've had awesome luck out of my AutoCraft brand AGM 65. That was the biggest they had in Stock the day I bought one and it keeps my truck cranking quick and all my electronic goodies running flawlessly, even down in the negative degrees. Here it is, just a little cheaper and with a different sticker on it.

ACDelco 65AGM Professional Automotive AGM BCI Group 65 Battery https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LCFHKCS/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_tcFOvbWRVCZ0P

If you order the AutoCraft labeled one off of the advance auto website you can get a discount, pick it up in store, and I believe it has a 4 year warranty because it's the platinum level.

Phenomenal. Thanks.

As I understand AGM stand for advanced glass mat. And means that they are superior at discharging and recharging .

I didn't realise they were available as standard car batteries. Is there anything to know as far as maintenance or upkeep.? Are they liquid, acid, lead, etc? Ie, acid level is a thing. Are they sealed or open(vented).

I worked with AGM batteries on a job. I thought they were super advanced tech. If they are a car battery, I'm wrong. As long as I don't have to treat it different to a standard lead/acid.

Thanks.

Go with at least an 800 amp battery, 900 would be better the glass battreries are the way to go. I have had a lot of luckt with oddesy over the years.battery measure by group size such group 27 or group 29 etc.

AGM's (Absorbed Glass Mat) are sealed, don't require any maintenance but do require, according to Enersys, a special type of charger.
There are other advantages to them, reading on the various battery mfg web sites will fill you in.

This looks like it will fit in the tray. But the posts are the wrong way round.

AutoCraft Platinum AGM Battery, Group Size H7, 850 CCA H7-AGM: Advance Auto Parts

All the batteries showing as correct for 04 Disco dont have the CCA.

Hmmn.

Also, to address your statement regarding battery and charging voltage, your's is right on the mark. Anything higher or lower can cause long term issues.

Battery and alternator sounds about right to me. IMO I buy the cheapest battery with the highest static output and CCA plus longest warranty available (usually 3-4 years) that dimensionally fits the battery tray. IMO battery buzz words are all rubbish and only there to help you part with more cash unnecessarily. I may be lucky but nearly all of my batteries have lasted 3-4 times the warranty period and the shortest time was an LR OEM, Bosch, which was 5 years. Maximum duration on all of my trucks has been 12 years so far. In my experience so far if they going to 'flunk' on you it's usually within the first 12 months.
