I need to replace the battery on my 2000 Discovery II. Do I have to go with the replacement offered by the dealer or can I get something from my local parts store? I called a place locally and they dont have Land Rovers listed at all. If anyone has any advise on other options I would greatly appreciate it.

 

Interstate! They have a number of BEAST commercial-grade battery options for the Disco if you're interested in that sorta thing, but if not - they have some other options which offer considerably higher capacity than stock. I work at a custom motorcycle shop that uses Interstate exclusively, so the Interstate driver guy knows all the models and which one will fit in a given vehicle (even if it's not listed as a fitment for that vehicle) - I ended up with one of their Work-A-Holic batteries, 780CCA or something. I wasn't too enthusiastic on dropping the extra mulah for the commercial grade.

I replaced the battery in my previous car (97 M3) with an MPT 91, 700CCA sealed with 72mo warranty and the thing was just awesome.

Ironically when the factory (crap) motocraft battery failed in the mustang, Glen (the Interstate guy) mentioned the SAME MPT 91 as an alternate. Sure enough, it fit PERFECTLY and even had the inset area in the case for the strap. This was NOT mentioned in their catalog - they had an MT40R which was 590CCA versus the 700 of the 91?!

So that's three cars with Interstate batteries, and after all the BS drama I had with previous models (adding water to the BMW batt, jumping the Disco, having the factory 1000 watt sound system in the mustang KILL the OEM battery / dim the headlights when bass hit..) I haven't had so much as a single problem since I swapped them out for IBS stuff.

Just do some research before you go with the suggested models; usually you can find a higher capacity battery with a better warranty for a similar price.

 

There are only a few actual battery manufacturers, they are all rebranded. Buy the battery with the most cold cranking amps with the longest replacement warranty you can find. Autozone duralast gold batteries have a great warranty and you can get 1000/800 CA/CCA for $85.

That is what I have, 3 years now with no problems, $80 I think it was.
1000 CCA (cold cranking amps) and a 6 year prorated warranty and 3 years free replacement.
It is made by Johnson Controls in Holland MI.

Interstate batteries are great batteries too, a good brand that has been around forever.

 

I third the duralast gold. I recently brought my old one into autozone after four years of operation. The clerk pulled up my original purchase via phone number and my pro-rated price because of the warranty (no extra fee for the warranty by the way) was about $44 for a new duralast gold battery. superb.

 

DO NOT USE what the dealer will sell you.... it will be overpriced and underpowered. i use a 1000CCA marine grade battery, i like the fact it wont leak ever. =-)

 

Or step up to Sear new 34 series Blue/Platinum, which is by far the strongest battery for the money you can get.
What ever you buy get as close to 1000 CCA rating to handle your trucks needs.

 

V8's really dont need that much CCA's tbh, thats diesel territory.

 

No it's not needed but it is nice.
