Where did you find the a lot less tight clearance spec for the LR V8? We would like to see them.

The min-max 0.00004" difference is not much less tight in my book. I found no other official specs after doing several web searches and found them to be similar for the original Buick 225. Recommended clearances seem to be unusually small compared to typical for some reason(?) and that's what our QC guy wants to check for. As No Doubt said once checked and final assembly done, "Either the crank turns or..."

All the relevant spec clearances are contained in the RAVE, General Info, pages 04-03 to 04-05 inclu: However, this is for a 4.0L engine but the clearances should be exactly the same for a 4.6L. Contained in RAVE is all the torque settings also on other pages.

Hi number9, I think IMHO the various clearances are tight compared to performance engines due to the Rover engine being a low revving, under stressed and relatively sluggish engine. I hate to say it, 'a truck engine', but had it been a performance engine with higher compression, high lift long dwell cams, higher revving and highly stressed the clearances would need to be greater, particularly the pistons in the bores but the oil pump and oil distribution would also need uprating to suit the increased power. The Rover engines be they diesel or petrol aren't exactly performance engines but neither is the D2, tuned engines lifespan becomes shorter and more unreliable, particularly when they 'grenade' on you. Just my observations.

FYI there is a separate engine overhaul manual that is pretty key for doing this sort of stuff. Attached. This is the 4th edition, which took me awhile to find -- most search results out there are all for the 3rd edition.

Thanks. Forgot to look all the Rave sections to find the latest. Diffidently more generous clearances for doing a OH.

4th edition is in the Range Rover section of Rave for those that have the whole enchilada.

Same specs made it into the General Data section of the RR Workshop Manual as well.

Specs in the Defender section even more generous.

Having 2 factory service manuals contradict one another builds confidence doesnt it.
The .002 seems more realistic.
I'll mic the crank journals, and use a bore gage in the main and rod bearings, and hope for the best.
Be the weekend before I get to it.
I'll post pics, and my results.
