Best HG and bolts?
Thanks Dr. Modo, to be honest the poster who reported pulling the threads out of his block using the studs didn't sit well. Actually it appears someone sent him a kit which wasn't intended for that engine, though, so I might reconsider but first I need my situation analysed, new thread with photos going up on the DII forum. Oh, yeah my longer bolts were not tight but hear that adding torque to match the short ones after the 180 is supposed to remedy that. Thanks.

You should go over to landroversonly.com and search for threads about studs vs the stock bolts. A lot of guys over there seem to have had issues with the stock bolts. There're enough guys with stripped threads that it makes me very wary of using the stock bolts.
But it is a contentious issue that tends to turn into argument around here.
Personally - at 111K my head gaskets just started to fail in the last few weeks. I will be using ARP studs and probly Cometic gaskets when I replace them.

Childeric,
I don't know what horror story you read about using studs but, it would be pretty hard to strip studs from a block as they only goes in hand tight. But i suppose everything that can be done right, can also be done wrong.
If you check every and i mean every engine manufacturer in England uses ARP stud kits,
now rover engines are like small block chevys over their and they do not use STY bolts anymore, that should tell you something.
but good luck
