I always figured a low profile tire on larger rims wouldgive the best mileage, but I have no idea.

If you have 18" rims, any street tyre will give you good results.
I recommend looking at toyo, I had a good experience with them until I got off road tyres instead.

By the way, stay away from goodyear right now.

Michlin makes a good low rolling resistance tire. Typicaly the higher the mileage warrenty the lower the rolling resistance.
Harder rubber last's longer but doesnt grip as well as a softer rubber.

For street use I would use the Falken Ziex S/TZ

I have used the Toyo Transpath, a good tire but for the money you can get like quality for less money which means more Fuel in the tank.

Oh yeah, since you wont be doing any off roading, go ahead and fill your tires (whichever you get)with Nitrogen. Everyone I know who has done that got around .5 better MPG, not much but its something! Some say it will also extend the lifeof yourtires. If you have never heard of this, here is the basic theory. The theory is that the oxygen in the air inside the tire, when heated as a result of driving, can oxidize and rot the inside of the tire over time. A nitrogen filled tire won’t oxidize for obvious reasons, no oxygen. This is all anecdotal though and for most people, some say it works some say its doesnt make a difference. But its worth at least trying.

The tread is important, but so is the air pressure. Make sure to get a street friendly tires, and keep it aired up.

Take a look at the Bridgestone Alenza at Firestone, out the door 5 tires installed, balanced, lifetime rotations, all under $1k. I just had them installed this week and look nice and ride well with very barely any noise on the highway.

But before deciding on these tires I was going to buy the Toyo HT from threadepot dot com but didn't want to wait and bought the Bridgestones since they weren't that much more after all was said and done. Both the Toyo HT and Bridgestone Alenza have, if I remember correctly, a 65k warranty. Also, both tires have a high tread life rating as well.

I'd stay far away from anything Goodyear.
