Which is the best year for a Disco 2? If you had a choice.

Picking a donor D2
I should have stated my question better. I am going to be given a disco 2 for free. I have to pick which one I want. Was told there are 6 disco’s to choose from. All are not running. I have no knowledge of the disco’s nor does the other party. I have to walk up, look at the Rovers and pick one. With limited knowledge I need to pick one best to fit my needs.

Yes to that! little or no rust 04 is worth saving than a good running rusted ones. No matter what upgrade you do or fix, the rusted frame will always bug you. Cheers

I purchased a 2004 with 150k miles on it. Drove it for 20k and the engine grenaded. We believe it was a slipped sleeve (major ticking prior to implosion) Purchased a second 2004 this past Feb, drove it for 5k miles and now have loads of coolant in the oil (lab confirmed). Thankfully, my second disco 2 is much better platform to insert a refurb'ed motor into. I'm taking that dive in a month or two. So, I'm 0 for 2 with 04s.
Can't blame 2003-04 block issues if the actual problem was prior bad maintenence and subsequent rotating assembly issues.
