Default BFG Rugged Terrain T/A

I know tires are discussed here ad nauseum, but Redrover will need new shoes soon and Walmart has the BFG Rugged Terrain T/A for $105 in P265/70R16, which is a great price for anything I've seen for the DII. Based on everything I've read a 265/70R16 will fit a stock DII with no rubbing.

Is anyone on this forum running this tire? Like many here I'm interested in something a little more aggressive than an all-season tire, but my offroading is limited and I don't want tires that are noisy on the highway. A few years ago I tried a set of Cooper Discoverer S/Ts that were noisy as hell, even in my driveway let alone at street or highway speeds.

Alex_M sang the praises of the Falken Wildpeak A/T3Ws here a couple years ago, and Walmart has them in the same size for $120 each.

My dad ran them on his Ranger and was quite happy with them.

Do you really want P rated tires? Isn't the spec for an LT?

The original equipment tires were either Goodyear Wrangler HPs or Michelin XPCs. Both are P-rated. The Owner's Manual and the Workshop Manual both specify sizes but are silent with respect to P-rated vs. LT-rated.

Our curb weight is 4,543–4,895 lb and stock tire size 255-65r16

The load rating on BFG Rugged Terrain T/A is 2400 lbs

The Wrangler HPs is around 2270

The Michelin XPC is also around 2270

So really those tires should not be an issue, the load each tire should carry is about 1200 lbs with an empty truck. If you add 4 adults and a bunch of gear say 2000 lbs get up to about 1700 per tire so you are still good, with a 800lb margin per tire.

Note winches, steel bumpers, roof racks ect add up fast

Thank you, Richard, that's great information. I'm no expert on tires, but from what I've read LT tires have stiffer sidewalls that make them tougher for aggressive off-roading and can make them marginally more noisy. For my needs and purposes I think P-rated tires would be fine.

Still waiting to hear reports about noise and any other experience of forum members who've had these tires. Maybe new or none have had them.

I'm still singing the praises of the Falkens. I've got 45k miles on a set now. They're still very quiet, perform great, and I could still get another 35k out of them. I'll probably replace them a little earlier than that because I'm itching to go up in size, but that is how well they are wearing.
