It's probably apples and oranges but I have had Bilstein 5100's on my FJ40 for a while now and I am VERY happy with how smooth the ride is now that my leaf springs have been broken in a little.

Bilsteins are good replacement shocks. I had those on my 03 D2 right when I bought it, but I notice my ride was pretty harsh. The truck at 58,000 when I installed the Bilsteins. Just recently I installed a Terrafirma med. lift with Terrafirma shocks. The ride is day and night, very comfortable, no harsh jarring when going over bumps, less rattling inside the cabin now. Price them out, get whats best for your needs.
