Default Blew a transmission. What would you do? Anyone have one?

04 d2, finally blew out the trans at 140k. Lost all forward gears.
looking at all my options. Local trans so can do everything, full rebuild for about 5k.
About 6k from local Rover independent for an imported Ashcroft rebuilt.
I don't feel like doing the work to put a used one in without having it rebuilt, even though that's obviously the cheapest.
but I have built axles, so it's worth keeping it going.

What would you do?

Any idea what made it blow? 140k is nothing, these transmissions are extremely robust. You say built axles, can you expand on that? If it were me, I would (and have) just throw in a used trans and move on. Unless there's something with your build that is taxing the system beyond its intended use.

Pretty robust trans, I would probably change the front clutch pack and let her rip. New seals of course. About $80 in parts. Or a used one. I personally have had three trucks over 200k with no trans issues.

That's my thoughts, but at the same time, look up "no forward gears" . There are LOTS of people with blown transitions

Go on FB marketplace. All the Covid offraders are ditching their discos. You can get parts for dirt cheap.

Yes, that's why I asked what you meant by built axles. In normal situations the transmissions in these trucks are bulletproof. Look up 4HP24 to see how many vehicles got them. It's typically people who modify other parts of the truck without taking into account what that will do of the rest of the driveline who have problems. Nothing will outlast abuse or neglect, which I why I asked those questions. In standard operating environments these things are pretty hard to beat.

Agreed. I have regeared Ashcroft lockers on 35". With the gearing out really shouldn't be any harder, But I think the previous owner abused the hell out of it.
So anyway, that is to say you would be comfortable getting an untested used unit?

Wrecked trucks usually are driving when wrecked, so if you can get one out of a truck obviously wrecked you should be good.
