Are you absolutely sure its the transmission and not the clutch?????

It works in reverse. Also it's an auto, as they all are in America (I think)

Yep, if it works in reverse but no forward sure sign of blown front clutch. Weak link on the 4HP ZF trans.

well you may have an auto, but unlike a manual that has 1 clutch ..

As these clutches and bands engage and disengage, different gears are connected and disconnected to convert energy into momentum. There are two bands and four clutches inside an automatic transmission, and a problem with any one of them can translate to drivability and performance issues with your vehicle.

the big question is which one has gone a clutch or a brake band, have you checked the oil level, filter etc

Not a question at all, if it moves in reverse but not forward it is the forward clutch that has gone. Known issue with 4HP trans.
