Default Bolts for Front drive shaft

I'm replacing my front drive shaft. Does anyone know the exact nuts/bolts I need to get? Standard grade, or grade 5 or 8....what grade do I need?

Thanks for any help. I would really like to just crawl under it once and not have to take one of the old bolts to the store before I can put the new shaft on it.

The bolts are 3/8-24 x 1 1/4. Nyloc nuts are 3/8-24. You can get them from Fastenal if you have one close by. You will only be able to replace the bolts on the front. The transfer case end bolts are captive unless you take it apart. Use new Nyloc nut for everything. Nylocs are a one time use item. Everything is Grade 5.

Both grades are good, Grade 5 or 8. The primary 'grip' is the friction between the mating faces of the flanges and secondary is the shear value of the 4 bolts so either grade is sufficient. Personally I wouldn't go higher or lower as lower may be too soft and higher too brittle.

Don't mix grades though. Use all of the same grade. Since the transfer case bolts are Grade 5 and captive, you should buy everything else Grade 5.

So neither the hardware store or Napa had the nylon lock bolts I needed.

Napa sold me some sort of metal lock nuts?? I forget the name, but end where the nylon would be is a bit oval vs round so it still locks. They said they are stronger and hold up better in heat, etc.

Anyone ever used these and will they work or should I find the nylon nuts?

I'm not hardware expert, but I'd think those should work. They are common on exhaust where the nylock just wouldn't make sense.
