Default bought a 2003 disco and love it! Now the electrical issues are here!

Hey guys!

I just picked up a 2003 discovery with only 51k on it! I got it for a steal but like all good deals there are usually some issues! Before I start ripping things apart I thought I might be able to get some info from someone on here!
All the issues seem to be electrical and hopefully are linked. Here is the list of interior issues

1) Radio does not turn on
2) power door locks do not work from the switch or the key fob ( can hear a click noise when the button on the dash is pressed
3) clock does not work on the dash
4) front power sunroof does not work.
5) rear passenger door does not open at all

Since the radio, power door locks and clock do not work and they are all on the dash I assumed they must be linked. Fuse relay or power module of some sort?

Exterior/ engine issues

Well I got the car from a friend and we had the battery replaced under warranty from walmart. the battery was beyond dead and the new one fired her right up. the problems I am facing is this.

after a few days with the new battery the first issues came about.

1) the M and S lights on the dash began flashing and the transmission went into limp mode. I let the car sit for a few hours and it went away

2) shortly after this the car will not start on the first crank. It seems like the battery is dead and will either just click or just turn over the motor once. I turn the key off and restart it and everything works just fine. Sometimes it will start fine other times it seems as if the battery is dead. Same trick and it will then start.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Download the RAVE manual for starters.
It sounds like something is draining the battery. Did the car come out with air suspension and was that replaced with coil springs?
Double check the battery terminal connections and the connections on the alternator.

Your battery is dead, either from a bad alternator or a bad battery that wont hold a charge.
Thats why you went into limp mode, low battery voltage to the transmission computer.

It must be a bad alternator because the battery is brand new. On top of that the car has never not started. I would assume if the battery was draining at some point it would not start.

Would the alternator cause the other electrical issues on the dash?

we got the passenger door opened yesterday and it looks like i need a door actuator. would that explain why the rest of the locks do not work from the dash or key fob?

Radio I assumed could be the fuse from behind it but i am still baffled why nothing works on the dash minus the AC controls.

i had a whole pile of dead electrical when i got my DII earlier in the year. My solution was to check all the ground points from the frame to body, clean and make sure they were all tight, dont know if this did anything but i felt better about it. Then i got a whole 2nd hand fuse box (there are 2 of them, i got the under hood one) 2nd hand from Drilbit and replaced all my fuses and relays. After that all but my the radio controls on the steering wheel now work.
Check your other fuse and relay box under steering wheel on the left side.

It sounds like your alternator is bad too, easy to check with either the $4 alternator checker for harbor freight or use a digital meter. measure the current across the + and - with the motor not running, start the car and repeat. should go from around 12V to somewhere between 13 and 14V.

you can also use this to find if you have a drain. pull all the fuses measure the current and add them back in one at a time. look for a voltage drop when a fuse is replaces and you may find if you have a drain on the battery.

Lastly REBUILD YOUR FRONT DRIVE SHAFT, buddy just made the $3000 mistake of not doing it and thrashing the transmission when it broke.

Let us know how it works out.

Unless the battery light is on on your dash then the alternator is putting out some voltage.
It wont be enough to charge the battery and run everything and it def wont be enough to charge the battery on a short drive.
But a long highway drive and it will at least keep it from going dead.
Have the alternator tested, AutoZone does this for free.

As for the other stuff, start with the alt, when bad they can cause all kinds of problems.

Progress!

replaced the power door lock fuse and the front power door locks now work with the button and key fob! The back passenger door we got open and will need a new lock actuator. The back driver does opens but does not lock and unlock with the key or button. I wonder if this is tied in with the other side or there is a back locking fuse.

Radio and clock also now work. I missed driving with a radio!

I am leaning to a new or rebuilt alternator as well. Going to start looking for a place locally to rebuild it for me.

I still do not have a working front sunroof. I am assuming the back and front are on the same fuse cause I only found one. The motor could be dead.

As of now I need a passenger side lock motor
passenger side exterior d pillar window trim
alternator rebuild.

The only thing that is bugging me right now is why the driver side rear door will not lock and unlock. any ideas?

I assume you have already removed the door panel on that door and checked all the connections. When I bought mine I found that one of my actuators had been removed and the wiring harness was just dangling there lol. Another door was just unplugged for God knows what reason. Gotta love PO's that pull every trick in the book to get you to buy the vehicle and get out the door.
