Why didn't you just build one similar to the Voyager racks? You'd pay about the same price honestly, just have more labor invested. I just bought nearly all the materials for mine, just need to finish my finals first before I start... I hate finals so much.

Also, those L brackets are going to bend (or more likely to bend) when there is weight on it, if they connect to the rack they way they are pictured (See post # 15, first picture, the two brackets in the rear).

I personally like the contour of the Voyager/SD style racks. I mean, the D1/D2's are so easily identified because of contour's of the roof, I wouldn't change that, I think that's a huge part of the Disco's identity. But if you like the square look, to each his own. Just my opinion.

i searched for diy racks but didnt find any i liked or found easy enough to make in a short amount of time. i found a safary rack i was going to drive 10 hours for but the guy never responded.

the l brackets will be below the rack, fully welded on both sides so they should not bend, post 15 shows what it would look like and i needed measurements for the s bracket.

I understand the mounts will be under the rack, if the rack is mounted to the L shaped piece, on the far side, it'll bend unless gusseted.

after some welding, ill make a cross bar for the L's.

the rain came in and stopped us from welding further. ill be cutting some off the legs to make them all even then welding the anchor point and drill the rest of the holes.

Oh hell yeah!! That thing is really coming along and looking good. It looks a lot better than the very first picture you posted. Spray it with a couple coats of black paint, throw a queen mattress up there, and call it the Penthouse Suite. You should have plenty of room up there.

You may already be planning to do this but I would recommend adding a small piece of angle iron in the indicated picture below for strength and you and your buddy should be able to stand up there no problem.

Even the design you are getting your idea from has a small angle welded in the corner for strength.
