Default Burning Pile of Wreckage and Blood w Los Tres Amigos

Well thats what almost happened, until I stood my whole weight with two feet on the brake and it slowly came to a stop just before smashing into a rapidly moving semi.

Heres the Jist of it....2003 Disco II. (ITS GREEN)
It had a brake problem where it would pull hard to the left.
We figured out the master cylinder was rusted at one hardline nipples and one whole side of the truck had no brakes because dot 4 was squirting out everywhere.
We put in a new master cylinder.
My neighbor who is not a Rover Mechanic, but a pretty good one otherwise, bled the system,, disregarding the ABS system, because he was clueless on that.
Everything seemed good, Got in to test it out and started cruising down the hill into an intersection. NO BRAKES.
Finally got it stopped. full strength on the brake pedal and emergency brake.
The Three Amigos came on the dash.

So what is going on?

Ive been told a bunch of theories and potential

1. ABS modulator is shot, stuck etc.
2. The brake system needs to be computer bled
3. use a pressurized brake bleeding system and bleed the abs system

any and all direction appreciated

via con Dios for now.

use a computer to bleed the brakes or a jump lead

no not a good mechanic, this could have ended much worse.

Bit of a dramatic thread title, but a 20ft pair of wire, a toggle switch, and insert the wires where the ABS relay goes F/R and the ABS pump will run when you toggle the switch = aka power bleeding.

I have replaced my Master Cylinder once and my pads several times. Each time I have followed the recommended bleed sequence and had no issues. I bought a bleed ball just to make it easier and I always work with a friend who pumps the brakes till we get pure DOT 4 and no bubbles. I have never bypassed the ABS to do it so I think you have other issues. I suggest you go to the Atlantic British website, I think they have a video that will help you.

This is what we will try first.
will an improper bleed throw up tres amigos?
if its not a bleed issue do you suspect a bad ABS pump modulator?

thanks for your experience in this...

Without pulling the ABS fault codes you are just honestly wasting time. Pull the codes to see what is going on with the ABS system. It could be the typical ground faults/shuttle valve switch faults = Option B repair is in your future, or a wheel sensor. Bleed it good several times, crank it, and see how your pedal feels. Then without a steep hill try to stop and see what you get.

Get it stopping first by properly power bleeding, then worry about the amigos.

Will do, Ill pull the codes on it tomorrow and will probably be back with a report.

A vehicle with a non-functioning ABS system operates just like a vehicle built before ABS was introduced. Many DII owners have gone for weeks, months, even years, with the Three Amigos illuminated.

As others have said, get the brakes bled properly so they are working. Then chase the Three Amigos.

I've personally never had a problem bleeding the brakes in my truck the old fashioned way. Others here can tell you how to use a 15-ft length of lamp cord to power bleed the brakes using the ABS modulator. Good luck.
