Default Busted Serpentine Belt

1999 Disco 2

Driving down a hill doing 35 mph today, belt busts and a bunch of quick engine smoke then called tow truck and now I'm home.

Had this belt replaced about 15k miles ago, although there was some chaffing with a wire harness that the LR specialist noted on my last check in about two months ago, it was relatively new.

Can anyone give me a run down of a check I can do before replacing the belt that would cancel some of the worst case scenarios out.

Also, read some scary stories about engine valve bending due to belt skipping...just any help or insight would be nice.

ps. I caught the last belt before it went, saw it going bad and had replaced before it snapped.

pss. Engine turns over fine, there was no smoke before hand and it wasn't over heating from what I can tell.

Make sure you get all the belt fragments out. I had a pulley go and found later that I had a few small pieces wrapped behind my harmonic balancer which it ripped apart my front seal and spewed oil everywhere.

The serp belt on these doesnt control the timing so bending a valve wont happen. There is a chain that goes from the crank to cam shaft under a cover on these trucks. Losing your belt just takes out your accessories (PS, AC, alternator, water pump, ACE (if equipped))

Sounds like a pulley seized. Turn them all by hand, I wouldn't be surprised if one doesn't turn at all or is really noisy.

Was thinking it could be ACE. the lights been on for ever...all these options seem reasonable fixes, which is nice. Thanks for re-affirming the chain driven, I thought so. Also, I'll make sure to double check all pieces are out.

The pulley going to the fan is very stiff... all others up top(alternator, ps, ac. seem loose)

Thanks for your input.

If one pulley is hard to turn, that could have caused your belt to slip off and shred itself, producing quite a bit of smoke in the process. It happened to me last year, my Mercury Sable had the belt slip off, because the idler seized up. Lots of smoke as the belt became trapped and shredded itself.

pulley to fan is waterpump
quit driving it until waterpump is replaced

if you have 140k miles and up
that is when the waterpumps fail

Maybe this will help... The pulley in the middle is your water pump.

And fan clutch, which has be dancing with that pump for millions of rotations. They like to hold hands and jump off the cliff together.
