buying a Discovery from 1996 through 2001, what to look for??
ok, so I am looking into a Discovery and would like some help in what to look for. I have vowed in the past that the Discovery, or H1 Hummer would be the only SUV's I would think about buying and well when I was in Portugal in Jan, I kind of fell for a buddies Discovery and how great it performed.
Which also leads to me ask, but I doubt if there are any, but are there any Diesel Discovery's here in the USA??
What are some typical trouble spots, what to stay away from, etc etc.
I have never owned anything other then VW's and have pretty much always done the work on them myself. So, I dont have a problem with getting underneath the Discovery to make sure everything is good under there or poping the hood to make sure everything is decent.
It will be a daily driver for me, but I will also be taking it off-roading.
thanx

Why up to 2001? The '04 is considered "the best" as it has the updated looks & CDL shifter. Look into D1's and D2's, then decide on a year. Diesel's are pretty rare here in the states. Browse through the last couple of pages here for posts about purchasing Disco's. There's alot of info so read up well.

I was actually looking at this one here on ebay, I think its one of the best looking Disco's and would be even better with a slight changes.

No Discovery diesels in the U.S. .
If you are going to want to work on it yourself the Disco I
is the easiest to work on.
On road the Disco II is a better ride.
We could debate the which one is best but what you need to do is find which one is best for you.
The Disco I and Disco II are very different.
So a daily driver and a off roader now ask yourself
what things the Disco I or II has that you want or can do
with out.
The most important thing I think is finding a good Disco
and that is the hard part.
At this time its a buyers market so take your time, and as you look you will know if a Disco I or II will fit your life.

ok, so what are the main differences from a Disco 1 and Disco 11??
I dont need anything that would be considered a luxury item.

pick up the Land Rover Discovery Ultimate Buyers Guide by James Taylor off Amazon.com. Its a small paperback for about $20 and list the changes in the models from the early DI to the 2004's
