Buying first Land Rover - Questions
This is my first post so apologies for any ignorance on my part. I have always wanted a Land Rover and I am now seriously looking at Discoveries. I understand that Series II have substantial improvements over previous models so I started my searches there. I see several 1999’s in my area for sale and I am about to start negotiations and test drives. I am a Porsche owner (911 and Cayenne) and can tell you what to look for when buying them but I’m really lost in the Land Rover arena.
I have a few questions if anyone would consider sharing their opinions and experience with me. This week I am going to look at a 1999 with 83K miles on it.
Are the 99’s good? (Any knows problems)
Should I expect to sink a lot of money into maintaining it? Should I get an extended warranty?
Are the older ones (before 1999) a better value or more reliable?
Thanks in advance and have a happy 4th!
Brad

RE: Buying first Land Rover - Questions
Brad,
I own a 99 D2 and swear by it. The D2 does have many up grades over the D1's and it is a little longer. What are you want the truck for?
Have you done any 4wheeling in the past?
Yes, Rovers are a little expensive to repair, OH WELL, thats the Brit's for you. Do you do any of your own maintance?

RE: Buying first Land Rover - Questions
Thanks Mike -
I really want it as a year round commuter vehicle but I have done some off-road training at a nearby facility (that’s where I was exposed to the Land Rovers). I would consider getting more involved if I had the right vehicle ;-)
I am very handy, I choose to bring my cars in for things like oil changes because of the mess but I am capable of most DIY repairs.
Any problems with these trucks passing inspection?
