Default Call For Photos: 225/75R16 or similar

Hey everyone, I'm working on my plans for my '99 Disco 2, and I'm currently looking for wheel and tire replacements for the 20" wheels that the PO installed. Overall, I really want to take my rover in a 'classic' direction, with no lift or maybe 1"-2", with the general goal of being a trail/expedition vehicle in the style of the Camel Trophy Disco 1's. I'm looking for photos of anyone's D2 who has gone this route. Specifically I'm looking for D2's with skinny tires (I'm looking at the general grabber AT2's in a 225/75R16, just barely taller than stock, probably on the NATO rims).

Can this look be pulled off with a D2? Is it too modern for the classic styling I'm going for? I personally don't love the 2"-3" lift with wide/large offset tires look on a rover. I've had a hard time finding any photos of people who have gone this skinny and achieved a classic look.

A 225 is really skinny. I think 255 is stock, I honestly wouldn't go any skinnier than maybe a 235/75r16. That will bring you in right under 30" at 8.8" wide.

Your problem is going to be finding rims skinny enough to fit that slim lf a tire without getting the balloon effect you see on vehicles where people use wider rims than tires, and that's the opposite of a classic look.

That said, I could be wrong. I'm working on the assumption that NATO rims are 8" like stock rims are.

I wouldn't mind a 235, but I don't believe the grabber AT2's come in 235/75. I could do 235/70 but would really prefer a bit more height. 225/80 would probably be ideal. 255 is stock and I definitely want a more old school look than stock. The nato wheels are 16x6.5, so rim-wise I could go super skinny.

D2 era NATO wheel may be 7" as some the of D2s also came with steel or alloy 7" rims.

If staying with most stock LR 16x8 rims a 225 would be too thin. 235 may or not be recommended to go on a 8" depending upon mfg specs. TireRack has min-max rim width in the spec for a particular tire.

I'm all for the higher profile tires to increase ground clearance and a more classic appearance. Function's what's important.

D2's never had a Camel Trophy setup. That was D1's so with that being said the stock 16inch tire for America was 255/65R16. I'd say a 245/75R16 would be okay at 30.5. or even a 245/70R16.

I can't stand a D1/D2 to sit low like a car. The stock 18's look tiny to me. I think a 2inch lift and 265/75R16's or 255/70R18's is an extremely nice looking combo on the OEM wheels. The Proline, and Hurricane rims look very good with a larger tire like the BFG KO2, Goodyear Duratrac, or Kumho M/T.

Also I'm pretty sure the D1 Camel Trophy setups had taller/stiffer springs installed to handle the extreme terrain and weight.

Most folks here prefer stock tires or over-sized wide tires with over-kill lift kits etc. Myself I dont follow trends and prefer the vintage tall skinny tires with moderate lift etc. Im delighted someone else shares my preferance. Im running 235/85R16 tires.




Stock 18" Hurrucane's.














You will probably need a spare tire relocator so your tires dont rub aginst the bumper and make it difficult to close the rear cargo door. Lucky 8 llc sells them.

Instead of buying the spare relocator you can just flip the spare carrier upside down and that will allow you to fit up to approx a 33. I think discovery2.co.uk has the wrote up. Super simple procedure.

I do love those 235/80s. I'm moving up to 35s when I get the opportunity, but I'm trying to get one in a 10.50-11" wide instead of a 12.50. It will have to be a metric size tire for sure, but I think ill be able to get pretty close.

Thanks for the input guys. Triar, those tires look awesome. I would go 235/85 but I'm not ready for a lift, so I need something smaller. Your rover looks great overall, I've read most of your build thread. Glad you stuck with it.
