Default Camshaft end float (Crower 53229)

Yesterday, I got my new Crower 53229 cam installed in the block. I installed the thrust plate and checked the end float. There is approx 1/4" movement in the shaft (a lot more than the original shaft). THe RAVE calls for 0.003 to 0.010".
Is this amount of movement OK?

I have read that some people ran the 50229 (old style) cam without a thrust plate.

Edit:
I may be getting ahead of myself. I just noticed that the RAVE says to measure end float with the gear installed. I did not have the gear installed. The old shaft didn't have a lot of movement without the gear installed and that was cause of my alarm.
While I am waiting for a new gear from Lucky8. I will installed the old gear and check float. I assume the gear and shoulder on the cam will capture the thrust plate, eliminating most of the end float..

Yup you need the gear installed to measure it. It will be loose without the gear.
