Default Fuel Pump Sender/Sensor/Float

I've got a 2005 RR HSE (not supercharged). The tank was almost empty and we left it sitting for about 3 weeks while on vacation. Upon returning, I filled the tank with about 5-6 gallons initially until we could get to Costco but the gauge appeared to continue to drop. Despite filling the tank the next day, the gauge continued down to ---Range in Miles.
I've read a number of posts that suggest this could be the sender or the float which is, unfortunately, integrated with the fuel pump.
I'm hoping that this is perhaps a stuck float. Can anyone help with:

- Is there a way to unstick the float?
- Where is the access to the fuel pump? Is there access through the interior compartment, and, if so, where is it located/how do I get to it?
- Are there any other simple solutions I can look into? If I have to replace the fuel pump (which seems to be pumping fuel fine) it look to be a $1K fix.
Thanks so much for any help, advice, and even picture tutorials.
Ray

Download the service manual for Green oval.com and it should give you instructions on how to remove it. As for what the problem is, its either a stuck float or bad sender like you said. You can try some additives to get the float to unstick, that and kinda bounce the rear end of the car around a bit . OUCH http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/WFX500010G.cfm

Just FYI - Did everything I could including putting SeaFoam for a few tankfuls. Finally broke down and took it to the dealer to diagnose. Was a faulty fuel sender. Normally, they would replace the whole thing ($1200+) but I pressed them for another option and they were able to replace just the sender ($500). So if this happens to you, there are three options:

- Replace the entire fuel pump: $1200 ($7-800 part http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/WFX500010G.cfm)
- replace the electrical portion of the fuel pump: $800 ($4-500 part http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/WFX500010.cfm)
- replace the sender only $500 ($150 part)

If it should happen to you, hopefully I've just saved you $7-800 bucks.

BTW, will be sending the part back to Land Rover. They should know that they may need to review their QC. These things shouldn't go after 33.5K miles.

Cheers!
