can be done in vehicle but it's not enjoyable tho pretty straight forward. Start removing things until you can access it and have room to slip it in/out. Done it twice. Timing cover, oil pan, rad, ac condensor (not fully removed but pulled out of the way), front grill all have to be removed plus intake manifold.

look it up in the RAVE. the only source of truth for that. We don't "set" timing on d2s but the position of the timing gears is how that is done so it's important but not an issue until reassembly and pay attention to how it was before you remove it..

I have everything removed other then the timing cover, I also have the lifters out as well. What would be the next steps in removing timing chain and cam and does anything with the timing need to be set at this point to remove or is that all done after the cam and lifters are installed?

pull the cover then and take note of where things are positioned. Also consult the RAVE (manual. it has all of this explained in detail).

was hoping someone could give me a walk through on the install. I know about all the proper lubricants to use and everything else I'm just running into conflicting stories on the timing procedure and when to do it

the RAVE will clear any questions up. It's been 4 years since I did both of mine so don't want to steer you wrong. I remember it being extremely simple (probably put it back out you found it type simple) but again don't want to mess that step up. I would soak the lifters in oil for at least overnight
