Default Can I eliminate the broken black plastic trim across the bottom of the Windshield?

As is often the case, the black trim that runs across the width of the bottom of my windshield is cracked and broken with bits missing?

Can I just eliminate the trim completely?

In addition to keeping water out of the vents the trim acts as a plenum for the HVAC. It's supposed to have a "filter strip" across the front of it that intake air passes through. Depending on how bad it's already broken, it's probably doing a pretty poor job of both of those functions already but it is a somewhat critical piece of the (poor) design of the HVAC cowl.
