Default Can I fit 305/70/16 size tires on my 16" disco 2 rims?

I was wondering whats the largest size tires I could fit on my discovery2 rims, 16". I currently run p255, 65, r16 on them. Would 305/70/16 fit on my rims without any alterations to my discos body? Whats the benefits and nonbenefits of larger tires. Thanks.

It will be close, may need to go to wheel spacer to move that tire out and away from the inner wheel well siding.
What have you done to strengthen the dif for that much tire, your current spider gears won't take too much abuse from those big tires.

the benefit is more ground clearance.

mike, is it the spider gears or cross pin that is the weak point?

I have always felt the spider gear teeth are too thin/weak, also the use of only 2 spider gears instead of 4 is a big factor.

With in a few months after buying my truck, joining the SCLR and weekend trails, I saw too many break and installed lockers, for that as well as the traction.

Mike...if I run completely stock, but add 245/75/16 tires, will I have problems with my spider gears? I'm know the 245/75/16's will not rub with my stock height, but I never thought about the spider gears before this thread.

Thanks for all of your input.

You're asking 2 very different questions at once. Yes, a 305/70R16 will fit on your factory 16x8 rims. I've run 305/70s on factory rims Dodge rims.

You're going to need a lift, probably 3", and more than likely a little trimming of the wheel well to make them fit. And you'll have to adjust your steering stops so much you'll be pretty much limited to driving in straight lines.
