Default Can the secondary air pump come on while driving?

The wife was driving to work today and after about a half hour of commuting called me a said she heard the car make a noise that sounded like a vacuum cleaner turned on. She said the temp went from 199 to 204 at that point. The only thing I can think of that would produce a sound like that is the SAI pump that normally only runs for the first few minutes of driving.

Some additional details: She spent most of that 30 minute drive on the freeway. She said the noise happened when she stopped at a stoplight on the offramp, lasted for about 7 seconds, and then went away. Temps stabilized again for the remaining 5 minutes of her drive at 199.

Could be your fan clutch, when it locks up the fan can get quite noisy, it is normal. However I have never heard if it described as a vacuum cleaner noise, but at 204 it will kick in.

Yeah, noises are pretty difficult to pin down sometimes. She’s in medical and pretty technical and good with analogies, so I trust that if she says vacuum cleaner, that’s the most accurate descriptor... IDK... If it repeats, I hope it does it with me in the car too so I can help diagnose it.

That does sound like the SAI pump. Mine does it too, maybe 3-4 times a year. Normally at a stop light or when I pull in to park and don't immediately turn off the ignition.

Hmm, interesting. I mean, obviously that's a glitch right?

I'm a woman, don't have SAI and I hear that noise from time to time too. I assumed it was my fan clutch engaging when the temps increase. It sounds like one of those canister vacuum cleaners that my grandma used to have when I was a kid. The type you pull behind and don't push...lol. (Kind of a whirring sound). That is about all I can add to the convo right now though because I presently have TWO non functioning vehicles. A Rover that is stuck on max RPM and a Jeep that has a faulty coolant fan that failed when the car hit 40,000 miles. I've had the Jeep less than a year, driven it 12,000 miles so I guess Land Rover isn't alone on the shady cooling system. Hopefully it's covered under warranty.

I'd definitely look the cooling system over well and check your fan clutch. I think it's normal but at this point....who knows

Hmm, interesting... well you have the noise but you have no air pump... that sort of throws a wrench into all the theories, assuming of course our noises are the same.

Hold on everyone. That sounds like your electric fan coming on. This fan is for when you are idling or running the AC. If you stop and air isn't flowing through the radiator, the temp will climb. Once you hit about 210 degrees on the thermostat the electric fan will kick on. Your SAI will never turn on after the vehicle warms up. Only on start up.
