Can sticking caliper be fixed?
Im getting ready to change out my front brake pads and rotors and noticed the passenger side front pad is all the way down to metal while the driver side is a little over half worn. Im assuming the caliper is sticking on that side based on how much dust that one wheel has been generating over the last few weeks. Is there any hope that when I compress the piston back in it will unstick it and it will function normally? or is it a given I need a new caliper?. I have had this happen on my toyota and after compressing it with a c-clamp it returned to normal function. Im trying to keep cost down, I just finished changing out the rear rotors and brake pads with akebono and Im using the same on the front so this is getting expensive.
It will probably work. They are no different than a Toyota caliper. Clean everthing and grease the guide pins up good. The best thing to do is pull the piston out and clean it up real good with a wire grinder and install new seals. Be forewarned, it takes a lot of patience and hand dexterity to assemble the new seals and piston. You may end up needing a new caliper if you can't get it back together.
It not the brand you want but the quality of the rebuilder ou are looking for. Don't buy new, they are too expensive, go to Atlantic British or British Parts of Utah for their rebuilt calipers.
