Sounds like the lever is disconnected from the linkage, or the linkage is a bit siezed - 10 mins with a torch under the car and an assistant to wiggle the stick should sort it out.

Cheers,

Sounds like your t/case solenoid has failed which will not let you engage low range. Can you engage regular low, not low lock?

Aren't the manual gearbox disco1's a mechanical linkage Mike? Rare for a Tdi in the UK to be an auto - I stand to be corrected though as virtually all my knowledge is Defender biased not discovery (not that there's a huge difference under the skin for a Disco1).

Cheers,

You still will have a switch on the tranny and a solenoid on the top of the t/case. If that solenoid doesn't get a signal from the tranny showing it is in neutral, you won't be able to go into low range, has nothing to do with the t/case linkage.

I disagree Mike - I can't find a single reference to a solenoid in a manual gearbox or that the manual box needs to be in neutral to change between hi and low on the T box and certainly not to engage difflock on a Disco 1, you can do that on the fly while still moving and in gear. That's the R380 gearbox for a 300 Tdi, not the ZF auto you'd find on a NAS V8.
