How do you work the starting fluid? Just a few cylinders, all cylinders, how much, etc.? Suppose the instructions might be on the can. I'll pick some up and try that. Any other advise?

Thanks all.

Starting fluid is very combustible. The easiest way is to get it into the air intake system. Give the can a spray and if you are getting spark you will get ignition. If you spray to much you engine will rev. Just like dumping in gas. If pull the air intake tub just before the throttle body, open the butterfly, as spray would be a good place to start. At that point you know you are getting air, and fuel. All thats left is the spark. It sounds like the spark is being created, but it may not be timed right. Plug wires out of order, crank sensor not working or shorted, coil packs not firing correctly, all guesses.

Turns out the motor is bad. Coolant in the oil and bad/no compression on several cylinders. : (

That is really a bad deal. Is it something you can return? "Guaranteed to run" that sort of thing?

It does suck. Waiting for a return call from the salvage yard owner to see what they'll do. There is a 30 day warranty, but my initial call with them did not go well.

For my own benefit in the future, can you do a compression chec with a motor out of the car by turning it by hand?

Man........I can only imagine your frustration.

What did you pay for this salvage yard engine?

What year vehicle did it come out of?

What happened to the original engine?

I thought I had Rover problems but replacing a bad engine with another bad engine would be the worst. I think I have my starting blues down to a bad ECU. I have another ECU but they need programed to be able to communicate with the BCU and there lies the new problem. Good luck with your situation.
