Default Swapped engine; won't rev past 1k

I have a 98 Disco 1 4.0 V8. I Put in a 97 4.0 engine. fired right up after swap but wont rev past about 1k. Runs really rich. Lots of white smoke. Not giving me any codes currently but was giving me 1316 and 1138 initially after the swap. New plugs and wires, drained all fuel and added fresh. Checked all injectors when the were off the engine and all working fine. Checked coils, all good. Fuel pressure is around 35, not sure about the fuel volume. Changed the fuel filter. Cleaned MAF. Air filter not plugged up.

Throttle position sensor working ok as indicated by scanning tool. Air intake temperature sensor working fine.

I read something about a spacer for the crankshaft position sensor. Don't remember one when I put it in. Maybe this has something to do with my problem?

Im at a loss. Any advice will be appreciated.

White smoke isn't a good sign,........

TPS will let you get to about 1700 RPM if it fails and engine will then die, MAF usually only gets you 500-600 RPM before engine shuts down.

CTS check out okay? You can pull the CKPS but I doubt that is the issue if it runs. How do you know the injectors were good? An injector can pass an Ohm test and still be dumping fuel.

I took all of the injectors off, hooked them up one by one to a car battery using an injector plug I cut off of an old wiring harness. I put some brake clean into the injector and used compressed air to generate pressure. All the injectors expelled the fluid just fine.

Pardon my ignorance... what is the CTS?

Coolant temp sensor, it sits right at the front of the intake manifold and has a connector like the injectors. If the sensor pukes it will run rich because the ECU thinks it's super cold out. If you have the old engine swap the old sensor in and see what you get, if it doesn't clear up pop the old injectors in WITHOUT cleaning them. Most brake cleaner is bad for plastic, you may have damaged the injectors trying to prevent a problem.

Ok. Thanks a lot for the help. I'll look into these potential fixes.

When you clear the codes, do the same codes keep coming in ? Also, to which engine does the MAF belong and is it OEM, and do you have access to another known good MAF to swap in ? Sometimes cleaning them does more harm than good, and some aftermarket is known crap
