Try having someone pull the release handle while you bang on the hood right above the latch.

someone needs to sit in the front of the hood as you pull the cable
then you keep the cable pulled and they get off the hood

Had this happen to me over 2,000 miles from home once. I ended up taking a LONG screw driver and a hammer to the plastic piece that covers the latch mechanism from the bottom. Had to lay under it and reach up behind the bumper and grill to break the cover off but once I got it off I was able to work the screw driver into the mechanism and pop it open. After that I have always lubed up the latch every other time I pop the hood and it hasn't happened since.

On my D1, If I would pull the release, it wouldn't fully release the latch. I'd have to pull the lever and then push on the lever. I'm not sure why, but it would let the hood open. I never had any issues on either D2, So I don't know if it might behave similarly.
