Cardan joint problems

How does the Cardan joint work and what are the pieces inside the ball between the shaft and the yoke?

It's acts like a CV joint by cancelling the velocity changes that you see in a standard U-joint. In the center (basically), there is a ball, socket, and spring. What problems do you have?
