Catalytic Converter
My 2002 Discovery was making a rattling/vibrating noise that was continuing to get louder. I took it to the shop (not a Land Rover Dealership - bad experiences in the past) that has completed work on my truck in the past. I was informed it was the catalytic converter that needed to be replaced as well as possibly the O2 sensors. Price is $1,100 for the converter and sensors. Without replacing the sensors it's $300 less.
How long can I dirve my truck before making the needed repairs and do I have to replace the sensors at the same time?
Thanks for your help!

RE: Catalytic Converter
How many miles do you have on the truck?
The cats have an 8 year 80K mile warranty on them. The longer you drive, the more damage you do. Depends on how bad things are. If the cat it glowing, you don't have long before you kill the engine.
I had 2 high flow cats installed from Magnaflow for $325. You got a really high quote, I would call around to more shop or get on their website to find a local dealer if you are out of the mileage range.
YOu can find decent prices for the O2 sensors at www.roverparts.com

RE: Catalytic Converter
Too bad. OK so you have two things to do, one is find out what killed your cat, be it bad wires, plugs, head gasket, poor gas or injector problems. Once you get that handled then have the cat replaced, there are on-line sites where you can buy good cats in the $50 to $70 ranges.
If you truck is lacking in maintance then yes, I would install new 02 sensors, it is a little early but it will sure make a difference in how it runs.
When was the last tune up related work done, at what mileage and what was done?
