Default Catalytic Converter

Hello,
Soooo Ive had my 96' Disc.for 8 long years and have come to the conclusion that my catalytic converter is bad; after reading the owners manual a few times (the guys/mechanics' told me I'm wrong, wrong, wrong) I know it's blocked and I can hear the ticking and it got fire-glow red last night. So I parked it up for now,and am figuring howbad this will hit my pocket. I am kinda glad to know what the root of my problems is, but now I have lots of questions;
Where do I start?? Oxygen sensors and a tune up??
Should I try and get codes first? Then prices? I thinkI get taken as soon asI walk in the door, (I'm a girl, as bad as that sounds, but this guy tried to charge me $25 for a tire patch last week!! Plus the guys/mechanics all thoughtcatproblem wasmy trans!!)

Thanks for any help!!!!

if you really think its your cats... go to a good muffler shop and have them replaced... cats cost anywhere from about $40 or $50 to like $200 for race spec ones... just the cheap ones should do just fine though... and for labor the muffler shop should charge you no more than 2 hours labor to do this as there is no bending of pipe or anything needed to facilitate the repair... they simply cut the old ones off and weld the new ones in place... should cost around 150 for the whole deal is my best estimate depending on how much the cats themselves cost... if they tell you like $500 tell them to go to... well you know where...

yea just call around different shops and see what prices they give you but just for a cat with labor dont let them charge you more then $200. how many miles on your truck? and how much maintenance have you done the truck?

Thanks guys.

Felipe, I've got about 140,000 miles on the truck and I believeI maintain it well, not just gas and go. It is time for a tune up. Should I check out the Oxygen sensors before going to a muffler shop??

Is your check engine light on? The first step is to find out what codes it's throwing before spending the money to swap out cats or any other part. Have you ever replaced your O2 Sensors? At your mileage they are toast if they are the originals. Get the codes and get back to us so we can help you decide what needs to be done.

If your cats are glowing then they are running WAY to rich, a GOOD tune up is where I would start, only use either Magnecor or Land Rover plug wires.
www.atlanticbritish.com has them both.
Once that is done see how it drives, if the cats rattle then they need replacing. Like the other guys said, go to a muffler shop and have them weld in new ones.
After that see how she drives, then go for the O2's.
If you go to AutoZOne they can read your check engine light codes for free, write them down and get back to us.

Go for codes then a serious tune up, with Magnacor 8 mm wires and at that point, you still may need to replace the cats cause once they start glowing they have been over loaded and won't be able to maintain the exhaust.
Also at your mileage, your 02's are fried.
