Default Catalytic Converters

Hey guys,
I just received the new 02 sensors for the 03. I got underneath it and started to work on removing the old 02s...which are going to be a pain because they are stuck in there good, not sure they’ve ever been changed...and I noticed how bad the cats look, from the outside at least. The truck has 151K on it and I thought that since I’m going through the ignition system and the 02s, I might go ahead and change out the Cats as well.

Found a set of bolt in two piece cats and Y pipe from EP Supply for under $300 shipped. Does the brand of the cats make any difference? Ive done a bit of looking and all Ive seen are universals, Walker and Magnaflow. I’m not sure what’s being used in the EP Supply set up.
But for that price....
Thanks!

If you think its necessary then replace it. I think the Magnaflow Y pipe with cats is around $800.00 last time I replaced. I would replace the O2 first if your cats are still working properly.

Thanks. I can find magna flow Y pipes with cats for around $450. But the EP supply are about 285. I’m not really looking to make this thing a hot rod I just want to make sure it’s got good solid new parts and make it a good solid driver. So I guess I’m just asking if there’s any detriment to going with kind of a more generic set up instead of a namebrand like magna flow? I think it would be good practice at this point to replace the cats anyway. Think I’m pretty much committed to that at this point.

Dude, the outside appearance of the cats has NOTHING to do with their performance.

Be patient trying to remove the O2s. You don't say in this thread why you are replacing the O2s. What codes are present? If there are no O2-related codes why are you changing them?

Thanks. I’m replacing the o2s because I want to do it for maintenance. Not getting a specific O2 code but I’m having a misfire issue right now with the following codes 0300 & 1300.
Ive just replaced the plugs and I’ve got new magnecor 8 mm wires, new coils and intake gasket on the way as well. Going to change the cats regardless because I want to. So I’m referring back to my original question.
and I’ll add....Is there a legit reason why I should not replace cats with 16 years and 151k on them?

You can get over 200k miles with the original cats. You are not showing any cat codes so why replace it? You have misfire codes that are not O2 related yet but youll replace the O2 anyway.
If you feel like replacing them all, then its all good and go with Magnaflow and make sure its CARB.

Well, hell...I just ordered the MagnaFlows. Ive always been a MagnaFlow guy anyway. I was incorrect. The MagnaFlow cat back exhaust was $450. The Cats and Y pipe were $621.
Out with the old, in with the new.

FWIW, my 04 has 148K on it and is still running original cats....with new O2s on it. Purrs like a kitten.....(for now) LOL! Even still, I got a coolant leak I’m hunting down.

Cant wait to get our 15 Disco Sport sold so I can REALLY start buttoning down the two D2s.

You'll want to get one of these as the clamp that comes with the Magnaflow is junk.

Amazon Amazon

Start soaking your exhaust manifold bolts with an atf/seafoam mix now. Do it daily till the new setup comes in. Youll probably still break a couple studs, but maybe you'll get lucky. Don't waste your time with PB blaster. It's been proven to have little to no effect
