Default CATS & headliner????

I have a 97 Disco 1. The membrane ontheleft hand cat has broken loose and is rattling. I was thinking about getting some aftermarket cats from Magnaflow and having a local shop weld them on, but I am worried about the emissions control. I am looking for any way to fix this other than spend $600 on a new Y. Anyone have any ideas??

On another note, I got this truck because a guy needed rent. She has been abused. I have replaced several parts, and now she is running very well. We have driven from OK to Chicago 2 times so far and no problems. But, I need a headliner with no sunroofs. I need the whole thing. The last guy just ripped it all down. backer and all. What a butt. I can't seem to find one in a salvage, and I check E-bay weekly.

Thanks!

Finding a shop to weld in aftermarket Cats will work in some cases, but they need to be aware of a clearance problem that sometimes prevents using the same model Cat on both branches of the Y-pipe.

Let me know if you find aftermarket cats that will work. I'm in the same boat. As far as the headliner goes try finding some rover scrap yards online. I would call these folks and ask them. http://www.roverlandparts.com/index.asp
Nice rig by the way.

Here is a good web site for the cats. http://www.completeexhaust.com/produ...roducts_id=184
As for the headliner, go to an auto seat shop and ask them if they can make you a new headliner.

I cut some Magnaflow cats into my BMW 540 with good success. However, as is the case with the Rover, the inlets and outlets on the factory cats are offset from one another (in addition to being at bends in the piping). For this reason, I would not consider the Magnaflows (or any center in/out universals) to be "direct" cut/weld-in's. As Geoman suggested, you'll want to find a shop that can deal with 1) fitting them into the factory piping and 2) fitting them within the factory components (frame supports, etc.). I hadthe BMWdone at a local hot rod/speed shop because they had an exhaust guy with a good reputation. I wouldn't suggest taking this job to a Midas-type place.....unless they're know to have a good custom guy.

If at all possible, TIG welding is the best. One way or the other, make sure they check for leaks before sending you on your way. A decent leak will not only have you throwing codes, it'll contribute to the failure of the new cats.

If installed well, you shouldn't have any emissionsor code issues(as long as you're not in CA). They'll also give you a slight growl underfoot.

After going through those motions with the BMW, I opted for a direct-fit aftermarket y-pipe for my Disco (2000). A local foreign parts wholesaler got me one for $391 and, aside from fighting with some rusted bolts on the frame support and muffler flange, it was an easy DIY. I figured I'd have spent half that just to buy some good universals and then more to have someone hack them in. So, at the end of the day, the direct fit was worth the little extra dough (to me at least).

Let us know how it goes with the Magnaflows.

Ya wish me luck. Worst case scenario is they wont work, I'll return em and I'll just have to get a Y [:@]. I will however be taking it to a good shop that is able to produce pipe bends and addititional piping that can compensate far back and forward enough to handle the bends. I'll keep you all up to date and let you know whether this optionis recommended or not. Cats, should be here this week, hope to have them welded in the next.

Sounds like you're going to a good shop so you shouldn't have to worry about worst case. They'll work. I doubt that Magnaflow would go as far as to specify a part number to fit the Disco if it couldn't be squeezed in.

I probably have 100k on my Magnaflows (actually madeby Carsound) and they're fine. If, by chance, you do run into the worst-case and the installer has a tough time squeezing the Magnaflows in, you could try checking out Vibrant Performance cats. They make some pretty compace units.

When the cats arrive, hold them up to a light and look through......you'll see why they're called "high-flow"! Not much to them.

Looking forward to hearing how they work out on the Disco. Take some pics of the cut-in if you think of it.
