I am running a Cobra 29 (soon to be a Uniden PC78LTW) mounted on the back of my center console. I mounted my mic hanger on the passenger side of the console so the mic is always easily accessible. The radio is out of sight yet easy to reach while driving. I've been using the same radio for so long I can make all the adjustments I need to without looking at the radio. I even change channels just by counting the clicks as I turn the selector. I originally had my radio mounted in the center of the dash above the stereo but didn't like it that exposed.

I am running 102" stainless whip off my rear bumper and it works great. It's flexible enough that even really low branches don't bother me. The best place to mount your Wilson is right in front of the rear sunroof, if you have sunroofs. If not I would mount it square in the center of the upper roof section for the best ground plane and performance.

I am running a Wilson 1000 off the top, center of the roof where you have the greatest signal strength, 360 degrees.

I've got a very well-written PDF document I can email you for mounting your Antenna to the spare-tire carrier on the back. I tried to attach it here, but it's too large. PM me your email address if you want it.

I've got a Uniden PRO510xl, very compact unit and I bought it brand new off of eBay for $20! I'm going to be using a Wilson Flex 4 antenna on the firestik mount in accordance with the write-up I've got. I'm still waiting on my parts to get here, but I hope to get it all set up over the weekend.

I have run my antenna off the spare tire carrier and it worked well. Of course with my Cobra 29 I was able to tune the radio to the antenna, something most other radios can't do as easily. Make sure your antenna gets up above the roof of the truck or you'll only receive signals from the rear of the truck. A 4' antenna works well and stands about 1' above the roof line.

I've used the Uniden Pro520XL in the past and it was a great radio for the size. A lot better than the Cobra 19 that was on the market at the time. I believe the only difference between the 510 and the 520 is that the 520 has RF gain control on it. I also tried the Pro538W in my Rover but got way too much electrical noise, even with an inline filter, for it to work. Over the past 16 years since I started driving I have tried most of the radios made by both Cobra and Uniden.

The antenna Wildhorse is using is strictly a roof mount so off the tire carrier isn't really an option for him.

Wolf Creek Pass is in southern Colorado, just east of Durango. It's a fun ride with a fully loaded truck and trailer. I believe it's about 9 miles of 9% grade with a 180 degree switchback about half way down as you head west.
